Probiotics for Humans and Animals

What are Probiotics, Prebiotics and Synbiotics?

Not all the "bugs" inside your body are bad for you. There are types of bacteria and yeasts that are not just beneficial but are actually essential for the health of your body. These microorganisms help prevent the bad types of bacteria and yeast from growing in your intestinal tract. In addition, they help make Vitamin K and keep your immune system working properly. They aid in the digestion and absorption of food and provide increased energy by improving the metabolic conversion of blood glucose to energy. They can even help to delay aging!

A normal, healthy body usually has plenty of these good bacteria, but there are several things that can change that. Antibiotics, a high fever, diarrhea, stress and poor diet can deplete your body of these required bacteria. Many Americans today do not have enough of these beneficial bacteria in their digestive tract. This can result in intestinal dysbiosis, a bacterial imbalance that results in an overgrowth of bad bacteria and yeast. One of the most common things linked to dysbiosis is yeast infections, but it has also been linked to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and rheumatoid arthritis.

Probiotics, also known as microflora, are the good bacteria and yeasts that replace those that have been lost. They can be found in various foods. Probiotic bacteria like lactobacilli are naturally found in fermented foods like sauerkraut and yogurt. Some foods have probiotics added to them in the manufacturing process. Among their many benefits, probiotics can cure many digestive problems like diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome, help to relieve heartburn and acid reflux, and lessen the symptoms of lactose intolerance. They can also help in the treatment of acne.

Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that feed the beneficial bacteria in your gut. They mostly come from carbohydrate fibers called oligosaccharides. Since they don't get digested, they stay in the digestive tract and stimulate the growth of probiotic bacteria, helping them flourish and stay healthy. Sources of oligosaccharides include fruits, legumes and whole grains. Many forms of dietary fiber have some level of prebiotic effect. Prebiotic oligosaccharides are also being added with increasing frequency to foods for their health benefits, including pet food. Prebiotics are less commonly found in supplements than probiotics, yet they are still vital to the diet and the body's health.

Prebiotics and probiotics together can restore the healthy balance of bacteria in your digestive tract. Synbiotics are the combination of both in the same supplement. Combining the two may give a synergistic effect, which means that putting them together may produce a combined effect that's greater than the effect they would have separately. In other words, together, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

The Deadliest Enemy of Good Bacteria

Antibiotics are great for fighting harmful bacteria and are necessary to treat some ailments. The problem is that they destroy not just the bad bacteria but the good ones as well. The fastest way to destroy probiotics in the intestinal tract is by taking an antibiotic. Many doctors have gotten into the bad habit of prescribing antibiotics far too often, for even the littlest of things. It is sometimes prescribed for yeast infections in the GI tract, but, as they are killing the harmful bacteria, those antibiotics are also killing the beneficial bacteria that could actually get rid of the yeast infection if there were enough of them present in your body!

Research has determined that 70% of your immune system resides in your intestinal tract. Taking an antibiotic can weaken your immune system if you do not restore it with a good probiotic supplement. The goal isn't to disregard your doctor's orders, but to complement the antibiotic treatment with a probiotic supplement. Please refer to "Instructions/Directions" for important information on taking probiotics when you are also taking antibiotics.

About Bugs Plus™

Bugs Plus™ is the best probiotic/prebiotic (synbiotic) supplement on the market. It contains 2.5 billion CFU of the probiotics Lactobacillus Acidophilus (DDS strain) and Bifidus Longum and the prebiotic Fructooligosaccharide per capsule. Yes, that's 2.5 billion, not million, at least ten times the number of bacteria that is found in most other similar products for humans, which seldom exceed 1 million "bugs" per dose.

Why Should You Take Bugs Plus™?

Many people who are aware of the benefits of probiotics often consume yogurt. What they may not know, however, is that commercial yogurt often lacks probiotics because it is pasturized, a process used to kill harmful bacteria but that also kills the "friendly" bacteria. Even the kinds fortified with lactobacillus acidophilus do not have viable probiotics since, as the days of sitting on a store shelf go by, they tend to produce bacteria-killing acids. Only fresh, homemade yogurt that is kept refrigerated can be a reliable source of probiotics, but even they often fail to provide sufficient amounts for individuals who are sick, have immune system issues, constant diarrhea, IBS, or are taking antibiotics.

Supplementation of probiotics on a daily basis is highly recommended to maintain the right balance of microflora in your body. For optimum health, an adult should continue to take probiotics throughout their lifetime. Unlike many types of medication, you cannot become addicted or immune to probiotics.

Many supplements contain only probiotics rather than both pro- and prebiotics. So, why is it best to have both? As stated above, prebiotics feed the probiotic bacteria, helping them grow and flourish. What this means is that increasing the amounts of prebiotics in your diet will help maintain a healthy level of bacteria in your intestinal tract. While eating certain types of food can supply the body with a good amount of prebiotics, as we all know, most of us don't eat right all the time. Therefore, daily supplementation with a combination of pre- and probiotics is an excellent way of making sure that your digestive tract has a strong and healthy population of those friendly little "bugs" that you need for good health.
